Following a Fall 2018 guest lecture by Dr. Ellen Carillo, the English Department invites proposals to present on ways to teach the reading/writing connection in our Cluster 1 courses. The presenter will receive a $200 honorarium.
Background | In her lecture, Dr. Carillo discussed how reading is key to successful college writing connections and presented methods for teaching active, “mindful” reading. To continue our campus discussion, the English department will host a lecture, followed by a reception, to discuss ways of reading in Cluster 1 writing courses. Topics might include:
- Methods for demystifying academic genres or reading expectations
- Class/homework activities that scaffold reading work
- Low-stakes evaluation measures that check students’ reading completion and comprehension
- Higher-stakes assignments that develop students’ critical reading skills
In addition, the selected topic will include examples of how class activities/assignments improved students’ reading and emphasize concrete takeaways for audience members.
Timeline
- Deadline for proposals is: Friday, Feb. 22, 2019
- Decisions returned: Friday, Mar. 1, 2019
- Anticipated lecture: early April 2019
This lecture is funded in part by a Provost Seminar series grant.
